Serial resistance heating cables

Precise temperature control and reliable frost protection

As an internationally active manufacturer of electric trace heating systems, eltherm develops and produces high-quality heating cables for a wide range of industrial applications. Our solutions are used wherever processes need to be reliably protected against frost or where media must be kept at a constant temperature to ensure smooth operations.

Thanks to a range of outer sheath designs, our standard resistance heating cables are suitable for various temperature ranges. They therefore meet the highest standards in terms of flexibility, chemical resistance and mechanical strength.

How do heating cables work?

Electric heating cables generate heat through the electrical resistance of a conductive material. When current flows through the heating conductor, thermal energy is generated; the power output depends on the resistance, the current flow and the applied voltage, in accordance with Ohm’s law. The current flow must not be allowed to become so high that the melting point of the conductor material or the maximum temperature of the insulating carrier is reached. To control the power output, several resistors can be connected in series. Depending on the application, power control is achieved using the appropriate measurement and control technology.

Serial heating cables

Serial heating cables are often sold by the metre and customised to suit the specific application. Their construction is based on a stranded or coiled heating conductor with an insulating sheath and an additional protective braid. Variants with an additional outer sheath are available for applications with increased mechanical demands.

Serial heating cables are particularly suitable for applications with defined power requirements and constant heating outputs.

Heating tape

Heating tapes are primarily used for applications that require a high degree of flexibility and high power output. Their construction is similar to that of a standard heating cable, with the difference that they are laid in two layers within an additional layer of insulation, thereby enabling them to deliver a higher power output. Due to its construction, a heating tape is more durable and optimally protected, whilst also offering particularly high flexibility. Common areas of application include tank heating.

Guidance on the assembly and installation of fixed-resistance heating cables

To ensure safe installation, the following points, amongst others, should be taken into account:

  • Surfaces should be clean and as free from unevenness as possible.
  • Heating circuits should be installed using original fittings.
  • Care should be taken to ensure that pipes are laid in a way that facilitates maintenance in the vicinity of pumps, valves and other components.
  • Permissible temperature ranges, such as ambient and holding temperatures, must be adhered to.
  • The use of suitable temperature controllers helps to ensure safe operation.

FAQ

Serial heating cables consist of a heating conductor surrounded by insulation. When a voltage is applied, heat is generated through resistance (Ohm’s law).

It is not permitted to cut fixed-resistance heating cables to length. The situation is different for self-regulating heating cables – in this case, cutting them to length is not a problem due to their characteristics.

Overall, there are many different IP protection classes, each consisting of two digits. The IP protection classes are precisely defined in accordance with, amongst others, ISO 20653 and DIN EN 60529.

A heating cable is a flat, insulated electrical resistor that heats up when a voltage is applied. Internally, the heating cable consists of an electrically conductive material surrounded by insulating materials.
