Parallel heating cables

Parallel heating cables are used to prevent freezing and to maintain the temperature of tanks, pipework, valves, filters and other technical equipment. They are used in a wide variety of sectors, including the food and paper industries, as well as in building services and transport engineering. Thanks to their versatility, they are suitable for both simple applications and operation under demanding environmental conditions.

Structure and Functioning

Parallel heating cables with resistance wire (e.g. ELP/Si) consist of two power conductors embedded in a first layer of insulation. The heating conductor is wound around this, and is in turn surrounded by a second layer of insulation. The protective braiding and outer sheath provide maximum safety.

The heating cable consists of a series of heating zones (length = contact spacing) and can be cut to the required length in sections at the contact spacing. When cutting to length, the heating circuit is interrupted at the next contact point, and this inactive section can be used as a connection. During the design phase, one contact spacing length must be added for each planned heating circuit.

Models to suit every need

Suitable versions are available for almost any requirement – including harsh or corrosive operating environments. The ‘BO’ version features a tinned copper protective braid with a thermoplastic outer sheath and is suitable for all low- and medium-temperature applications. The “BOT” variant is additionally fitted with a chemical-resistant fluoropolymer outer sheath (Teflon) and is therefore particularly suitable for aggressive environments involving chemicals, oils or fuels.

FAQ

Serial heating cables consist of a heating conductor surrounded by insulation. When a voltage is applied, heat is generated via the resistance (Ohm’s law).

Parallel heating cables with resistance wire consist of two supply conductors embedded in a first layer of insulation. The heating conductor is wound around these and is also surrounded by a second layer of insulation. The protective braid and the outer sheath provide optimum protection for the heating cable.

It is not permitted to cut fixed-resistance heating cables to length. The situation is different for self-regulating heating cables – in this case, cutting them to length is not a problem due to their characteristics.

Overall, there are many different IP protection classes, each consisting of two digits. The IP protection classes are precisely defined in accordance with, amongst others, ISO 20653 and DIN EN 60529.
