Gas bottle heater

Gases play an important role in many technical and industrial sectors. Suitable storage and supply systems are required to ensure they can be stored safely and used reliably. A constant and stable gas supply is particularly crucial where high withdrawal rates or sensitive applications are involved.

Gas cylinder heaters ensure a reliable and constant gas supply by increasing the flow rate and stabilising the pressure. They prevent gas cylinders and fittings from freezing, particularly when gas is being drawn off at high rates or as the fill level drops. At the same time, they enable the gas cylinders to be emptied almost completely. This is particularly important in the case of high-quality and costly noble gases.

Targeted frost protection

In order for liquefied gas to be drawn from a gas cylinder, it must first evaporate and turn into a gaseous state. This process requires heat, which the gas draws from the immediate surroundings or the surface of the gas cylinder. As a result, the cylinder gradually cools down. Moisture in the ambient air condenses on the outer wall of the cylinder and may freeze if gas is drawn off continuously. A layer of ice forms on the cooled cylinder surface.

Precise level measurement

Noble gases are frequently used, particularly in the semiconductor industry, and as they are expensive, they must be utilised as fully as possible. The gas cylinders in question are therefore usually placed on special scales, which are used to monitor the fill level. However, if the temperature of the gas drops, its weight – and consequently the accuracy of the scale’s measurement – changes. This can result in a false indication that the cylinder is already empty, even though there are still residual quantities in the container.

To ensure the cylinder is completely emptied, the gas cylinders are heated. Gas cylinder heaters or thin heating mats from eltherm prevent the noble gas from cooling down too much, thereby avoiding measurement errors. This allows the scale to reliably record the actual fill level, and the gas cylinder is only replaced once it is actually completely empty.

FAQ

To determine how full a gas cylinder is, it is weighed and replaced if necessary. As gas loses volume and becomes lighter in cold conditions, the reading on the scales may be inaccurate when outside temperatures are low. This means that the scales may indicate a weight that is too low, and the user may be inclined to replace the gas cylinder even though it is not completely empty. To avoid this, the gas cylinder can be warmed using a very thin heating mat, so that the gas inside is kept at a constant temperature, does not lose volume, and the scales determine the correct fill level.

As the gas only changes from a liquid to a gaseous state under pressure, the pressure inside the gas cylinder must be maintained even whilst gas is being drawn off. This ensures that more gas is released. To maintain the pressure in the gas cylinder, an electric trace heating system is fitted to the cylinder.
