Electric heating of parabolic antennas
To keep reflector surfaces free of snow and ice
In telecommunications, a parabolic antenna is referred to as a type of directional antenna. Its main component is the parabolic reflector, which focuses the electromagnetic radiation incident parallel to the axis of the reflector at the focal point, where it is picked up by an antenna and transmitted to a receiver or a distribution system.
As parabolic antennas focus signals into a narrow beam, they can concentrate on a specific signal source. By focusing these signals onto a single point, they are also capable of receiving or transmitting weak signals with high quality. The size and shape of a parabolic antenna can vary depending on the requirements and frequency.
As parabolic antennas offer high directivity, they are used in radar systems, for microwave radio links and for data transmission via satellite. To prevent snow and ice from accumulating on the reflector surface, parabolic antennas are heated. This reduces interference during transmission and reception!
Bespoke trace heating solutions, even at -25 °C
Fitting a heating mat to the back of an antenna is a technically proven and reliable method of protecting the antenna from frost. Antenna manufacturers and network operators thus benefit from smooth and reliable operation over many years.
Heating mats are highly weather-resistant and virtually maintenance-free. They can be adapted to any type of antenna. In our own sewing workshop, heating mats are individually cut to the shape of each antenna dish. The electric trace heating system consists of a heating mat with integrated insulation and a fluoropolymer-insulated heating cable. A safety switch, which automatically switches off the heating at 80 °C, is built in. Optionally, a temperature sensor can be pre-installed, allowing for the connection of a temperature controller. The heating mat is subsequently permanently attached to the antenna surface using adhesive strips. This ensures an optimal fit on the reflector and good heat distribution.
Technical specifications: eltherm heating mats for parabolic antennas are designed for reliable operation within an ambient temperature range of -40 °C to +80 °C. The integrated safety thermostat also automatically switches off the heating system if the mat’s surface temperature becomes too high – providing protection against overheating in direct sunlight.
Key facts
- A perfect fit for all types of antenna
- Minimal weight
- Moisture-resistant
- Highly durable – even in extreme weather conditions
- Virtually maintenance-free – making it suitable for remote locations too
- Effective, full-surface heat distribution
- Constant, self-stabilising heat output
- No additional insulation required
- No deformation of the antenna when the heating is switched on
- No overheating when exposed to direct sunlight
Control and regulation / Monitoring: The integrated resistance temperature sensor is the key input for the control and monitoring system. In the standard configuration, an anti-freeze controller reads the signal and automatically switches the heating mat on as soon as the measured temperature falls below a configurable switch-on setpoint (typically +2 °C to +5 °C), and switches it off again as soon as the surface has warmed to above the switch-off setpoint (typically +8 °C to +10 °C).
Protection classes, standards and approvals: eltherm heating mats and heating cables for satellite dish applications are designed and tested in accordance with the relevant European and international standards for electric trace heating. The heating mats bear the CE mark and comply with the Low Voltage Directive (LVD 2014/35/EU) and the EMC Directive (2014/30/EU).
FAQ
Depending on the location of the parabolic antenna, ice or snow may form on the reflector surface due to weather conditions. This makes it difficult to transmit and receive signals at the focal point of the parabolic reflector. To prevent this, an electric trace heating system developed by eltherm, featuring bespoke heating mats, is used.
Heating mats can be perfectly adapted to any type of antenna. This ensures optimum surface contact and ideal heat distribution. Thanks to their long service life and virtually maintenance-free operation, the mats can also be used in remote locations.
