Wide range of industries

A self-regulating heating cable is applied in a wide range of industries. From heating a sugar silo to prevent condensation, through to gutter heating – we will find an individual solution for your requirements. A self-regulating heating cable is planned individually and tailor-made for you by our engineers. For Example: Via a pipeline, service water passes through a hall. To protect the water from frost in winter, the pipelines are to be heated. This prevents the pipes from freezing without having to heat up the entire hall. The ELSR-N heating cable (e.g.) is suitable for this purpose.

Typical applications in:

  • Chemistry and petrochemistry (ELSR-N,-LS, -H, SH, -SHH)
  • Food processing industry (ELSR-N,-LS, -M)
  • Maritime and offshore (ELSR-N,-LS)
  • Potable water pipes and flexible tubes (ELSR-M-AF/BF)
  • Open area (ELSR-Ramp)
  • Cryogenic storage tanks (ELSR-FHP)
  • Oil and Gas (ELSR-H, -SH, SHH)

What is a self-regulating heating cable and how does it work?

Self-regulating or self-limiting? These terms are often used as synonyms, with self-limiting most accurately describing how it works. Self-limiting heating cables consist of two parallel bus wires embedded in a heating matrix doped with carbon particles. Above this is the insulation and (depending on the design) aluminium foil or protective braid and finally the outer jacket. When the temperature rises in operation, molecular expansion increases the distance between the carbon particles. The resistance increases and output drops. When temperatures fall, this process is reversed and output increases. This procedure regulates or limits the heat depending on the ambient temperature and prevents overheating of the trace heating.

Do you need a temperature controller?

Due to the way the cable works it eliminates the need for regulation with additional accessories. Nevertheless, self-regulating heat cables can also be operated with the appropriate measurement and control technology (e.g. ELTC-14). By means of a control system, the cables are not permanently switched on and therefore also require less power. We will be happy to discuss with you whether an operation with or without a control system is the right choice for your application. Moreover, selected ELSR heating cables are approved for use in hazardous areas and we can offer a specific product range for the USA and Canada as well.

Where a self-limiting heating cable can be used

The ELSR (eltherm-self-regulating) trace heater is used for freeze prevention and temperature maintenance on vessels, pipes, valves, etc. It may be immersed in fluids. Equipped with a chemicallyresistant protective jacket* (see “BOT” version), pipe heating is not only possible inside a water pipe, but is also in aggressive environments. Further information on nominal voltage, bending radius or ambient temperatures can be found on the detailed web pages of the products. There you will also find further documents such as data sheets and approvals / certificates. Feel free to check out our youtube channel for assembly instructions as well.

FAQ

Self-regulating heating cables are made up of two parallel supply conductors embedded in a cross-linked resistance heating element doped with carbon particles. As the temperature rises, the distances between these carbon particles increase due to molecular expansion. As the resistance increases, the power decreases and vice versa. Due to this process, heat will be regulated and overheating of the heat tracing will be prevented.
