Heat Trace Solution for Coal-fired Power Plants

Electrical heat tracing is required for the entire infrastructure of heavy fuel oil lines in a coal-fired power plant. Applications include stations, pump houses, oil lines flowing into the boilers, oil lines inside the boilers and oil lines in additional auxiliary boilers.
In order to put the power generating process in operation, the oil must be heated to 50°C within 24 hours. This heated oil starts the boilers, igniting the coal. Once the coal is burning, the oil line is cut off.

The Medupi Power Station near the coal-mining town of Lephalale in South Africa’s Limpopo province will produce 4,800MW of power. Being a super-critical coal-fired power station, Medupi is more efficient than the current fleet of coal-fired power stations which means it can produce more electricity using less coal and water, and therefore produce less emissions per unit of electricity generated.
Medupi is the first in South Africa to have a super-critical boiler and turbine technology that is designed to operate at higher temperatures and pressures than South Africa’s existing power stations. Super-critical technologies provide not only stable and high quality electricity, but also a better solution for reducing CO2 emissions and minimising environmental impact.
As mentioned earlier, electrical heat tracing is essential for a smooth start-up of the boiler. Special heating cables manufactured at eltherm’s factory in Germany heat Medupi’s heavy oil lines to 50°C and the coal is ignited.
eltherm delivers not only the heating cables (including complete engineering) but also the entire control and monitoring system, assembly, commissioning and documentation.
eltherm has also been entrusted with the electrical heat tracing requirements at Kusile Power station, another baseload power station with an output of 4,800MW. Kusile and Medupi will be the third and fourth largest coal-fired power plants worldwide.
Medupi and Kusile utilise dry cooling technology designed to operate in areas with severe shortages of water. Kusile will be the first in South Africa to install flue-gas desulphurisation (FGD) – state-of-the-art technology that ensures compliance with air quality standards. FGD technology with later be retrofitted at Medupi.
