Electrical heat tracing with MI cable

Mineral insulated heating cables are used to cover applications that require high temperatures (e.g. chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas industries). Unlike resistance heating cables or self-regulating heating cables, mineral insulated heating cables can withstand temperatures up to 1000°C. In addition, the moisture and chemical resistant MI cable can be used for process heating and temperature maintenance on pipelines, vessels, cryogenic storage tanks, power plants, machinery and equipment. The "Clean Laser Seal" technology also guarantees the highest resistance to various chemicals.

What are MI cables made of?

Mineral insulated heating cables are manufactured and assembled entirely from high quality nickel/chrome alloy 825 or stainless steel (1.4541). The "Clean Laser Seal" technology ensures a homogeneous and 100% stable system and thus guarantees an enormously high performance and always reliable function. The insulation layer consists of magnesium oxide, which has a very high melting point. In addition, clean laser sealing offers today’s best possible protection against stress corrosion cracking in applications where leachable chlorides, high sulphur content or other highly aggressive chemicals may be present.

Protection against corrosion and extreme temperatures

In addition to protection against aggressive chemicals, MI cables can withstand temperatures of up to 1000 °C and are resistant to both moisture and heat due to the outer sheath. This resistance is an important safety aspect, especially in potentially explosive atmospheres. Alloy 825 is the material of choice for high temperature process control.

How are MI cables designed?

MI cables consists of a heating conductor, mineral insulation and outer sheath. They are available as single or twin core heating cables with mineral insulated cold lead connections. The free end of the cold lead is seamlessly sealed and connected to a flexible supply lead. The diameter corresponds to the cold lead plus a 1.5 mm² ground connection. At each cold lead end there is a compression ring sleeve made of flameproof stainless steel.

Where are mineral insulated heating cables used?

For example: At the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant NOOR III, molten salts must be heated to 550 °C and above all: kept at temperature. They are used to transport, store and convert solar energy to power. As part of the project in the middle of the Moroccan desert, a total of around 42 km of mineral-insulated heating cables were installed.
